Effective Conversations

Have you had a good conversation with someone where you really felt connected? Effective conversations are built on the conversations we have, not the ones we don’t have.  Looking back in my life I had a few moments like these and the reasons for the success of these conversations were simple yet extremely effective. First, communicating your thoughts. Second, allowing the other person to speak without interruption and third, being open to learn from the other person.

There is much potential for misunderstandings when we communicate.  People differ in their beliefs, values, experiences, education, culture and so much more.  Communicating how you feel in an honest way can build great connections. Identifying what the issue is about and what bothers you enables you to express your thoughts clearly and truly. Expressing how you see a situation and addressing the ‘real’ issue  by using ‘I’ messages can create a positive experience.

Respecting the other person’s opinion as well as expressing your own is a step towards a more effective interaction and a deeper relationship with another. Allowing the other person to speak without interruptions can demonstrate the importance you attribute to their communication. Not listening can convey the message that what the other person is saying is not important to you. Be open to learn. The more open we are to listen to what others have to say, the more we can learn and grow.
